Hi! My name is Chris Penny.
I’ve been working in the Green Industry since 2005.
I ran my own lawn care business for about 11 years.
I’ve been deeply focused on using new technology to help grow these businesses for about the last 10 years, full-time for the last 5 years.
In that time I’ve gotten to work with green industry businesses all over the world, ranging from around $250k-$10M and man-o-man have I learned a lot from getting to see behind the scenes.
When you get to work closely with these businesses and compare a bunch of them on a day-to-day basis it doesn’t take long to see patterns behind what works and what fails…
The next part I mentioned above is something that was obvious once I saw it but took me a while to see.

It was in the phone call analysis that I started to pick up on this trend:
Some companies have staff who are excited to grow.
Some companies have staff who are not excited to grow.
The companies that had staff who were eager to grow are kicking ass and taking names. It seems like the people are happy to be there.
The companies that have staff who don’t want to grow are more often suffering and the people seem stuck at them. They were growing but it’s a much harder slog.
You can see this in their sales closing rates, you can see this in their customer service responsiveness, you can see it in their profit margins, you could hear it in their tone of voice.. it all lines up, and it’s pretty obvious which companies are on which side of this fence.
➡️ When I see a company that’s gone a little stale and the team doesn’t seem ready to grow it’s not because the owner is a giant jerk or treating people badly. Usually they are all great people there’s just something out of balance.
Just like any motor on any of your machines…
Your business needs to be tuned properly for the best results, but too many of you are missing the levers you need to be able to adjust.
Hiring and bringing on new work is one of the balances that are the most important if you want to build a growth culture at your business and attract the best staff, and clientele.
Just like you don’t use a bucket to go and get water anymore, nor should you be attracting the most important resources your company needs in drips and drabs.
These need to be automated systems that you can easily fine tune on the fly. Just like if you hit a longer patch with a mower you can adjust the machine, rev up, or raise the deck a bit and keep going – you need to be able to do this with your pipelines for new work as well as your hiring pipeline.

The best way to get your staff to hate growth:
Put them through periods of crazy overwhelm followed by boredom.
Staff will only put up with this for so long before they will start to subconsciously sabotage your efforts to change things up on them.
Instead…
You need to be able to stay on top of how much work is flowing in and be able to control it based on how everyone is handling it.
You need to be able to rely on the flow enough so that you can be confident enough to hire based on your measurements, knowing your predictions will be accurate.
All of this is much more possible than most green industry business owners are aware.
